Mass Poetry Festival–May 5-7, in Salem, MA: see details at Mass Poetry Festival website, https://masspoetryfest2023.sched.com/

May 5, 2023 - May 6, 2023

Friday, May 5th, 1 to 2 p.m.

Five poets whose collections have been published by the Washington, D.C.-based Word Works will read poems that explore the physical and metaphysical presence of birds. Their poems observe and describe different species, with their various behaviors, and consider birds as harbingers, emissaries, and omens, as figures of hope, grief, and eros. Poets include Jennifer Barber, Carrie Bennett, Nadia Colburn, Kevin McLellan, and Meg Kearney. Their diverse aesthetic outlooks, ranging from experimental methods to traditional lyric forms and blended narrative-lyrics, encompass the many ways in which the presence of birds informs our existence.

Saturday, May 6, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Massachusetts, a state filled with poets and poetry, including a significant number of national poets laureate, to its shame, is one of the few states without a state poet laureate. But in Massachusetts, many towns and cities have their own poets laureate: Boston, Somerville, Springfield, Amesbury, Arlington, and Brookline, just to list a few. In the three years since the Academy of American Poets has been offering major grants to American regional poet laureate, three recipients have come from Massachusetts. At this event, regional poets laureate Jennifer Barber, Ellie O’Leary, Porsha Olayiwola, Steven Ratiner, and Lloyd Schwartz will read their poems and talk about the significant work they have done in their communities.
